Miyagi Souke

Michio Miyagi was an excellent performer of Soukyoku of Ikuta Ryu, not only being a great composer. Miyagi Souke is the institution that promotes Michio Miyagi's Ikuta Ryu Soukyoku and his original pieces as a being legitimate virtuosity(named gMiyagi Soukyokuh), as well as to maintain the standard of this virtuosity.@ Michio Miyagi , on September 1, 1905 at the age of 11, was granted a license of Ikuta Ryu Soukyoku from Nakajima Kengyo ‡V and started as a professional. It was how Michio Miyagi was entitled to succeed Souke. After the death of Michio, Miyagi Souke was succeeded by his wife Sadako, by niece Kiyoko then by Kazue sisters. The group by Miyagi Souke is named gMiyagisyah.

Michio Miyagi

1894 born in a settlement area in Sannomiya Kobe. In 1902 lost eyesight and became a disciple of Nakajima Kengyo ‡U. Since then he set his path to be a Koto player. In 1905 licenced. In 1907 moved to Incheon, Korea due to family reason. In 1908 at the age of 14, composed gMizu no Hentaih. In 1917 with an ambition moved to Tokyo. In 1919 the first concert. In 1920Aplayed in Great Recital of Japanese Music with Seifu Yoshida and Nagayo Motoori. Since then Michio has become a master of New Japanese Music which was the rage of early Showa period. In 1925 appeared on the first radio broadcast. In 1927 had an exclusive contract with Victor Records. In 1929 composed gHaru no Umih. In 1930 started teaching at Tokyo College of Music( current Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music, dept. of musicj1937 appointed as professor at the same university. In 1932 played gHaru no Umih together with French female violinist Rene Chemet in her concert. Later records were sold in Japan, U.S.A. and France and got a reputation. After the Pacific War, in 1948 honored as a member of Japan Art Academy. In 1950 won the First NHK Broadcast Cultural Award. In 1951 established gMiyagi Kaih. In 1953 flew to Europe and joined International Folk Dance Music Festival as a Japanese representative. Died on June 25, 1956 at the age of 62. He fell off the train on his way to the tour trip to Osaka. Composed more than 400 pieces. Devoted himself in improvement of musical instruments and developed gJyu-Shichi Gen (17 strings)h, gHachi-JyuGen (80 strings)hAgTan-Goto (short Koto)h, gDai-Kokyu (large Chinese fiddle)h Also known as an essayist and wrote more than ten books including gAme no Nenbutsuh.

Sadako Miyagi

Born in Otsu-shi, Shiga in 1889. In 1918, became a disciple of Michio Miyagi. On May of the same year married to Michio and supported him during hard time. After Michio passed away, Sadako succeeded Miyagi Souke, also appointed as the honorary chairman of Miyagi Kai and the chief director of Miyagi Kaikan( current Miyagi Michio Memorial Hall). Died in December 1968.

Kiyoko Miyagi

Born in Otsu-shi, Shiga in 1905. In 1918, moved to Tokyo and became a disciple of Michio Miyagi, worked with him since then. After Michio died managed relevant sect as being the successor of Miyagi Souke and the chairman of Miyagi Kai. Being as the successor of Miyagi's music, continued teaching and playing. 1971 appointed as a professor at Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music. 1978 appointed as the chairman of Ikuta Ryu Association and the chief director of Miyagi Michio Memorial Hall. In 1983 became an important intangible cultural property( so called gliving national treasureh). In 1985 the chairman of Japan San kyoku Association. In 1986 a member of Japan Art Academy. In 1988 won the gKun Santou Zuihoushouh. As the leader of Soukyoku world, continued a variety of activities. In 1990, published gKoto Hitosuji nih. Died in February 1991.

Kazue Miyagi

In 1912, born in Sosha (current Korea). In 1921, moved to Tokyo and became a disciple of Michio Miyagi and worked with him since then. After the death of Michio she became the Miyagi Souke and the vice chairman of Miyagi Kai. After the death of her sister Kiyoko, managed sept as being the chairman of Miyagi Kai, also was appointed as the chief director of Miyagi Michio Memorial Hall. Beineg as the successor of Miyagi's music, continued teaching as a professor also gave concerts as a player. In 1986 won the gKun Yontou Zuihoushouh. During 1993 to 1994, she produced the gcentennial celebration for Michio Miyagi h that was conducted throughout all of Japan. Made efforts in construction of gMiyagi Michio Monumenth(in Ise) and gTenkyo no Monh( in Shirahama). In 1991, the chairman of Miyagi Kai as well as the chairman of Ikuta Ryu Association. During 2000 to 2003, was the chairman of Japan San kyoku Association and the artist under an exclusive contract with Victor Records. Organized gMiyagi Gassoudanh. Died in November 2005.
Miyagi Gassoudan

Miyagi Gassoudan was founded as gMiyagisha Kenkyu Bukaih in 1933 for their domestic purpose of improvement of orchestra techniques, however in two years started the concert activities with the name of Miyagi Gassoudan. Then, after going through some changes , it was re-organized in 1969 by Miyagi Souke, Kiyoko Miyagi and Kazue Miyagi, which is current Miyagi Gassoudan.

In 1970 Appearance on the new year program of January 2 by Kansai TV broadcast as the beginning, Miyagi Gassoudan started their activities. Until now they have been active in having concert across the country, playing for radio & TV broadcast, recording. They play the music from classical to modern music and of course Miyagi Michio's pieces. In 1975 they had concerts in Tokyo and won the best prize at the Art Festival by the Agency of Cultural Affairs. They have been receiving high ratings.
