What is gKotoh ? |

Koto is a string instrument that was introduced from China during the Nara period. It is long bodyimeasuring 180cmjwith 13 strings. You play it wearing picks on three fingers of right hand. Koto has been played as a part of Gagaku orchestra since the Heian period.

What is gSoukyokuh ? |

Soukyoku is a tune mainly played by Koto. It is mostly vocal music and some are instrumental music. |

Tell me the history of gKotoh. |
|
Soukyoku is believed to be born as an accompaniment of singing, since Koto was used for gEtenraku Utaimonoh of temple art during the Middle Ages. During the Edo period, a blind musician Yatsuhashi Kengyoi1614|1685j composed a modern Soukyoku which was the seed of present Koto music. Soukyoku is also an origin of Shamisen song gJiutah , which then was succeed to the followers by another blind musician. |

What are currently exsiting gRyuhah ? |

Currrently there are two major Ryuha, which are Ikuta Ryu comes from Ikuta Kengyoi1656|1715j and Yamad Ryu originated from Yamada Kengyoi1757|1817j. Michio Miyagi belongs to Ikuta Ryu. |

What is gKengyohH |
|
Kengyo is the highest rank in the aged association of blind people named gToudouhwhich was organized in the Muromachi period. Performers of Heike Biwa, Jiuta, Soukyoku, also acupucturists and masseur/masseuse were the members of the association. Toudou was under the government's protecting system. However the government abandoned the protecting system and blind people lost their privileges. Since then performers of Jiuta and Soukyoku organized an association on their own and confer the name gKengyoh. |

Sankyoku is generally to play in concert by 3 string instruments which are Shamisen, Koto and Syakuhachiialternatively Kokyuj. Lately we call Soukyoku, Jiuta and Shakuhachi music ior Kokyu musicj collectively as Sankyoku. |

What is gNew Japanese Musich ? |

New Japanese Music is creative activities undertaken during 1920's to 1930's, key musician of which was Michio Miyagi. Miyagi did not like the name New Japanese Music and presumably owing to that, people gradually stopped using this name. |
