Miyagi's Music

When we talk about Japanese renowned musicians, we never put aside Michio Miyagi. Diagnosed with permanent blindness at the age of 8, Miyagi stayed determined to set his own path to the world of Koto, and became a disciple of Nakajima Kengyo U of Ikuta Ryu. While still only, 14 Miyagi composed his first work “Mizu no Hentai.” With this composition Miyagi established a proud record in musical history in Japan.
Maintaining his position at forefront of “New Japanese Music” movement, Miyagi continuously pioneered a new musical world by introducing self-taught western music and its approach such as records, braille scores, which provided stimulus to the Japanese music scene. He played together with an orchestra, played Cantata on a Japanese instrument and also created new instruments such as “Jyu-Shichi Gen (17 strings)”, “Hachi-JyuGen (80 strings)”,“Tan-Goto (short Koto)”, ”Dai-Kokyu (large Chinese fiddle)”. The musical endeavors of Miyagi brought new perspective to the old-fashioned and conservative world of Japanese music and helped its development to current standards. Miyagi succeeded to revitalize Japanese music which was once lost by western music.
